Greg Abbott Texas Attorney General P.O. Box 12548 Austin, TX 78711-2548 greg.abbott@oag.state.tx.us Dear Mr. Abbott: In August, your office has an opportunity to right a horrible wrong. In representing the state in the habeas corpus proceedings against two Mexican nationals wrongly convicted of a 1996 Littlefield murder, we call upon your office to take an unprecedented position in support of justice. As you know, the murder convictions of Alberto Sifuentes and Jesus Ramirez were based on testimony from an eyewitness who has been proven absolutely wrong. Store security video camera footage clearly shows Brenda Ayala could not have been at the crime scene at 2 a.m. as the state insisted throughout both trials. And that’s only the start of a long list of improprieties that littered the investigation and poorly prepared defense of these two men. Mr. Sifuentes and Mr. Ramirez speak little English. They are poor. But they were hard-working respectable citizens in our community before shoddy police work targeted them as the primary suspects in a murder they could not have committed. On Aug. 1, a judge in Littlefield will consider granting them new trials. For the sake of our two wrongfully imprisoned citizens – and the Texas justice system itself – we implore you to do the right thing. Stop the cover up and help Alberto and Jesus their rightful chance to a new, fair trial. Signature Name Address
